More than a number on a board
A digital scoreboard shows the score, but equally carries team names, the match clock, the foul count, the shot clock and, between phases, your sponsors' images. For many clubs that last part is what carries the investment: the board pays for itself through the sponsor space it creates, not through the score.
From digit board to video scoreboard
A digit board shows only segment numerals and is the simplest and cheapest form. A full LED board is one continuous screen whose layout you set yourself, so you can switch freely between score layout and sponsor image. A video scoreboard goes further and also shows live footage and replays. The freer the screen, the more you can do with it and the finer the pixel pitch has to be.
Operation
Operation happens from the scorer's table, with a control panel or a tablet. What matters is that a volunteer can work it without a manual: one button to start, stop and correct. For basketball and futsal the link to the shot clock and the sound signal matters too.
Installation
A board in a sports hall hangs on the wall or from the structure above the court and has to be ball-resistant. Outdoors it calls for a mast or a truss structure, with water resistance and a wide temperature range. Allow for power and a data cable through to the scorer's table.
What determines the price?
The type of board sets the order of magnitude: a digit board, a full LED board and a video scoreboard are far apart. Then the size and pixel pitch, the sport with its specific functions, and the control set. Finally the installation: wall mounting indoors is a different matter from a mast on a foundation outside.
