Fluted board

Fluted board is a light plastic sheet with a ribbed, hollow core — much like corrugated cardboard, but in plastic. It is the cheapest of the three panel materials, and the lightest. The downside: in certain light the ribs can show through the image.

Fluted board – direct print

Fluted board – direct print

Light, ribbed plastic sheet with direct print. Cost-effective for temporary signs and campaigns, indoors and out. Not intended as permanent façade signage.

Fluted board – film + laminate

Fluted board – film + laminate

Printed film with a protective laminate on fluted board. For larger surfaces where budget matters. With the laminate it lasts a few years, but it remains a temporary material.

What fluted board is

Fluted board is a polypropylene sheet with vertical flutes running between two skins, much like the structure of corrugated cardboard but in plastic. That makes it light, stiff in one direction and completely unaffected by moisture.

The trade knows it under several names: fluted board, fluted polypropylene sheet, hollow plastic board and a number of manufacturers brand names. It is the same material every time.

What it is used for

Fluted board is the classic material for temporary outdoor communication. Election boards, for sale and to let signs, site announcements, direction signs to an event, notices fixed to a fence. It is light enough to hang from a post with two cable ties and cheap enough that you do not have to collect it after the campaign.

The direction of the flutes

This is the detail that goes wrong most often. The sheet is far stiffer along the flutes than across them. A board hung from its top edge with the flutes running horizontally will sag; with the flutes running vertically it stays flat. So tell us how the board will be fixed and we will run the flutes the right way.

How long it lasts

Outdoors, fluted board holds up well in material terms: it does not rot, it does not absorb water and it does not warp with damp. What does happen is that the print fades under UV. For a campaign lasting a few months that is not an issue. For a sign that stays up for years, dibond or PVC foam board is the better investment.

Printing and finishing

We print directly onto the sheet, single or double sided. Finishing is done with drilled holes for cable ties, with rounded corners, or as a cut-out shape. For boards that go onto a ground spike we position the perforations so the board does not spin in the wind.

Why the price varies

The size and the sheet thickness set the baseline. After that it comes down to single or double sided printing, the finishing added, and above all the quantity. Temporary boards are usually ordered in runs, and the print set-up is then spread across that whole run. That is why a hundred boards work out far more favourably per unit than five.

What we do

We print, cut, drill and deliver bundled per destination if you want us to, which is handy when the same run is split across several municipalities or sites. Tell us how the boards will be fixed and how long they need to stay up, and we will determine the thickness and the orientation.

Frequently asked questions

What you see here is a selection. Our range is considerably wider — in sizes, materials and finishes that we cannot all show online. Tell us what you need it for and where it has to go, and we will work out what fits.
