Magnetic signs: visible when it matters, gone when it does not

A magnetic sign is a printed magnetic sheet that holds on any flat metal surface without adhesive. Fitting takes seconds, removing it just as long, and nothing is left behind. That makes it the logical choice when the same vehicle or the same piece of equipment does not always have to project the same thing.

We print and cut magnetic signs for companies with a fleet, sole traders, contractors, home care services, emergency services and organisations working with changing equipment.

Where they make the difference

• On leased and private vehicles used for work. Permanent lettering is often not allowed under a lease contract, or has to be removed on return, with costs attached. A magnetic sign avoids that entirely.
• For mixed use: a van that is a company vehicle by day and private in the evening, or a vehicle representing a different client on each project.
• For temporary campaigns, events and trade fairs.
• On machinery, roll containers, load beds and racking, to mark zones or ownership.
• In subcontracting, where the same vehicle works for several clients.

The limits, honestly stated

A magnetic sign is not a full substitute for vehicle graphics, and it is important to know that in advance.

It only holds on flat, magnetic metal. Aluminium and plastic panels — used on more and more modern vehicles — will not hold it. On strongly curved sections it lifts at the edges. At motorway speeds a large sheet can be caught by the wind once an edge comes loose.

Also: do not leave a magnetic sign untouched in the same place for months. Moisture and dirt work their way underneath, and on some paint finishes prolonged contact leaves a difference in colour. Take it off periodically, clean and dry both surfaces, and put it back.

Quality and thickness

The thickness of the magnetic sheet determines whether it stays put. A sheet that is too thin has insufficient pull and blows off; a thicker sheet holds considerably better but follows a curve less easily. For vehicles we recommend the heavier specification.

The finish matters too. A UV laminate over the print protects against scratching during fitting and removal, and keeps the colour good for years. Without a laminate the print fades in the sun and scratches every time it is handled.

Practical points

Clean and dry the surface before fitting. Lay the sheet down along one edge and roll it on gradually, so no air is trapped underneath. Store magnetic signs flat, or rolled with the magnetic side outwards, never folded — a crease stays visible and causes a lifting corner.

What determines the price?

Magnetic signs have no fixed unit price. The cost follows from the size, the thickness of the magnetic sheet, the finish and whether it is laminated, whether it is cut to contour, the number of pieces — the set-up cost of the printing is spread across the run —, and whether we produce the design.
