Modular staging for events, ceremonies and sport

Modular stages are platforms you build up from separate decks, adjustable legs and steps, so that the same components make a small speaker's platform today and a full stage next month. The principle stays simple: identical decks are put on legs, coupled together and finished off with steps, a handrail and, if you wish, a skirt all round.

The users are varied: cities and municipalities that need a platform for a new year's reception, an award ceremony or an open-air concert, sports clubs with a finish or prize-giving stage, schools and associations that give a hall a temporary stage, and companies building up a product launch or staff party. Because the system is reusable, it quickly becomes worthwhile as soon as you need a stage several times a year instead of hiring one each time.

Versions and dimensions

A modular stage consists of standard decks that you lay side by side up to the area you want. By ordering extra decks the stage grows with your needs. The height is adjustable via the legs, so the same set gives you a low platform for a reception or a higher stage with a good sightline from the hall. Steps with a handrail, rear and side rails, skirts all round and an anti-slip finish are the usual additions.

Materials and technique

The decks are built around a light metal frame with a solid, moisture-resistant top panel. That combination gives load capacity without making the whole thing unmanageably heavy: build-up by two people has to remain possible. The legs are telescopic or adjustable in fixed settings and take up minor unevenness in the ground.

Building up, safety and use

Always put a stage on a level surface with sufficient bearing capacity. On grass or sand the legs sink in and the load per support point changes: use load-spreading plates in that case. Above a certain height a handrail or edge protection on the open sides is essential, and steps should have a handrail. Before every use, check that all couplings are actually locked.

If the stage is outdoors and a canopy, backdrop or banner is added, wind becomes the deciding risk. A backdrop acts as a sail. Anchoring and ballast are then not an option but a safety duty, and as organiser you are liable for that.

When a modular stage is not the right choice

For a large covered concert stage with trusses, lighting and sound you need a proper stage structure, not a modular system. And anyone who needs a stage exactly once and has no storage space is usually better off hiring. The common mistake is buying too small: a stage that just fits the current event is immediately too small once a lectern, a screen and three guests are added.

What determines the price?

The price depends on the number of decks and therefore the total area, the height chosen and the type of legs, the finish of the top panel, and the accessories such as steps, handrails, skirts and transport carts. Printing of the skirt, the number of colours and the run also count, as do delivery, any on-site installation and whether you are buying or hiring.
