Traffic cones for temporary demarcation

A traffic cone is the simplest piece of signage there is and at the same time one of the most useful. It needs no anchoring, no permit and no tools: putting it down is enough. That is why one sits in every van belonging to a technical department, a contractor and an events crew.

We supply traffic cones to local authorities, contractors, technical departments, companies, schools and event organisers, in standard versions and with your own print.

What you use them for

Cones mark what is temporary: freshly painted lines, a work zone, a reserved parking space, a diversion on a site, the layout of a course, or a hazardous spot awaiting repair. They also guide: a row of cones steers traffic more smoothly than a sign that is only read at the last moment.

What they do not do is physically stop anything. For an excavation, a trench or genuine protection you need fencing or barriers. Cones say "not here"; they stop nobody who is determined to get through.

Choosing the height

The height follows from the speed and the sight distance.

• Low cones of around half a metre are enough on car parks, in warehouses and on sites where traffic moves at walking pace.
• Mid-height cones are the workable standard for most applications on roads within built-up areas.
• Tall cones of three quarters of a metre and above are advisable along roads with higher speeds, because they stay visible from a distance and are less likely to blow over.

A second consideration is storage. Taller cones take up more space in the van. Choose them as tall as necessary, not as tall as possible.

Reflection and visibility

For daytime use on an enclosed site a plain cone is enough. As soon as work takes place in the dark or at dusk, or alongside a road with traffic, you need reflective bands. There are various classes of reflective film; the higher the class, the further the cone lights up in headlights.

In addition there are cones with a lamp fitting, with a clip holder for a small sign, or with an eyelet through which tape or chain can be threaded. That last option turns a row of cones into a continuous barrier straight away.

Material and weight

Most cones are in PVC or rubber. PVC is lighter and cheaper; rubber is heavier, stays flexible in frost and is less likely to blow over. A weighted base is advisable along roads and in windy locations: a cone lying on its side is worse than no cone at all, because it confuses.

Watch the colourfastness too. Cheap PVC fades in the sun from orange to pale pink within one or two seasons, and then it no longer stands out. A version with a better pigment costs a little more and stays bright for years.

Your own print

Cones carrying your company or municipal name make clear who manages the zone, and they go missing noticeably less often. That last point is no side issue: cones are the most frequently lost item in any technical department. We print the cone itself or supply a printed sleeve.

What determines the price?

Traffic cones have no fixed unit price. The cost follows from the height, the material (PVC or rubber), the weight of the base, the presence and the class of the reflective bands, any accessories such as a lamp holder or a hanging eyelet, a custom print and the run size for it, and the number of pieces, because with larger quantities the cost per cone drops noticeably.
